Playground Surfacing

A “poured in place” rubber surface, was one of the most expensive components of the project, and provided a universally accessible foundation for the KASH Playground. Poured over a gravel base, it creates a smooth, permeable, brightly colored substrate which is somewhat flexible to break falls beneath playground equipment while it allows universal access for wheelchairs, strollers, and walkers. This surfacing is what creates the “universal access” opportunity
and creates a graphic visual under the play equipment. The brightly colored surfacing is also
helpful for those with visual impairments and creates an exciting park focal point. A four inch black base is applied over gravel and then the one inch top colorful rubber surface is toweled on in a specific design.
